My art history book list

My art history book list

The study of art history not only needs to understand its historical process, but also if we horizontally understand the social situation at that time, we can better help to understand the meaning of this art movement and the works of painters.

many people have asked me what books I can read when I study art history. On a reading day, I think I can write a special article about it.

I am not an art history major, but an interior design major. Therefore, on this basis, the art history books I read are less professional. If you are interested, you can refer to them.

study art history out of interest. In the past, when I was painting in high school, my teacher was a professor in the Department of Oil painting. I used to exchange in France, so I had a soft spot for Impressionism. When everyone likes to go to the bookstore to buy sketches and copies of gouache pamphlets, the professor thinks that if you want to draw well, you must copy the works of masters, because if you copy the works of ordinary people, no matter how similar they are, you will never be better than them.

so I started the road of copying Impressionist works. At first, because I didn't understand the history of art, I thought that since I wanted to draw still life, I copied Cezanne's apple. If he does not understand art history, he will not be able to find out the painting skills of Cezanne's still life painting, and he does not know that his works have a unique perspective method. It was very bad to follow suit, and he was taught a lesson by the professor. He said to me, "you have to understand the painter's state of mind when he is painting, understand what his work is trying to express, and copy his work with his mood so that you can copy the image." When I remember this sentence

, I begin to read art history.

Oh, by the way, at that time, my ex-boyfriend also told me that women should read more to have temperament from the inside to the outside. Maybe this is the reason that put me on the road to reading art history.

I study art history macroscopically and microscopically, first I read the general history of art, then I read my favorite genres, and finally, I study individual artists. Art history is the history of the development of civilization in human society, and all schools are influenced in chronological order. The decline of the former school means the rise of the next school, so it is necessary to understand how a school style came into being and how it was out of date. It is very necessary to understand the development process of the whole history.

it's been so long that I can't remember all the books I've read before. Here I only talk about some of the books I remember:

Dress and appear sumptuous in our fashionable petite cocktail dresses. Enjoy the combination of simplicity and utility.

the first art history book is the Story of Art by Fang long, from prehistoric art to pop art in the 20th century, from west to east, from rococo to thangka.

the Story of Art

Hendrik William Fang long

then read a lot of Jiang Xun's works. "the History of Western Art written for everyone", "deciphering Monet", and the audiobooks on the history of Western art he lectured in the university are also very interesting and have a good voice.

Fu Lei: "Fu Lei talking about Art record" (or "Fu Lei talking about Art"), "Fu Lei Art essay", "Twenty lectures on World Art masterpieces". Compared with Jiang Xun, Fu Lei writes better, depicts works of art very exquisite, has his own very unique insight, and recommends "Twenty lectures on World Art masterpieces".

Feng Zikai: Feng Zikai on famous paintings, Twelve lectures of Western painting School

Eco: the History of Beauty, the History of ugliness

Kandinsky: the Spirit in Art,

Power of Art

Simon Shama

Decoding Western famous paintings

self-Portrait of the Artist

Fang Xiuyun

Nine lectures on World Art History

Mark Gatlin

Susan Woodford

A New Theory of Western Art

Freeland

Dada and Surrealism

David Hopkins

the complete series of world famous painters of Hebei Education Press

Yilin Publishing House's great museum series (recommended)

this series of books was written by Italians. Therefore, the description of the Italian museum is more comprehensive, and the author knows more about which works are the treasures of the town pavilion. Each Italian city has written several books. But for those relatively large museums, such as the Louvre, the British Museum, the Orange Garden Art Museum, etc., the content is too general, space restrictions can not talk about the essence of each large museum collection, can not grasp the main points.

if you are interested in classical art, to understand them, You need the following books:  Ancient Greek /Roman mythology: the Epic of Homer (the Iliad and the Odyssey), Metamorphosis, Kyoko Nakano's the Mystery of Greek mythology

Christianity: history of Orthodox Images

Contemporary Art History

Why can't you read Modern Art? Why didn't you make it when you were five?

MoMA highlight:

Art Origin is so magical: explain in detail 80 masterpieces

Design History:

Art and Visual perception

Wang Shouzhi's "World Modern Design History"

Wang Shouzhi's "Modern Design History of the World" is also quite famous, probably because I don't have a good impression of this book because I read the kindle version. I still can't understand him.Why do you call fiat500 Mickey Mouse?

"Design is everywhere."

John Heskett

I suggest that people who want to study design should read this book first, which will help you better understand what subject you are going to study and what you can do in the future.

 Ai Honghua:

Ming Lan: "Design History"

 Architectural History:

Deng Qingtan's "illustrating the History of Modern Western Architecture" is a good one.

Point! Push! Recommend! A history of gossip about architects in the 20th century related to running water villas is very interesting. I suggest you first understand the general history of architecture and then read this book, you will find that architects are cheap, too!
  Modern Architecture: a Critical History

History of Foreign Architecture by Shanghai people's Fine Arts Publishing House

in addition, watching documentaries of art history can make people remember better than reading, especially about BBC. I especially recommend "the Power of Art", "sex and=", "sensibility:=", "the=", "allure=", "of=", "art=", "nouveau="> (which involves the history of art and architecture of New Art)," Design Talent "

in addition, I also like to buy picture albums produced by museums, which are generally the most official, rigorous, and impersonal. Can lead the reader to be able to understand works of art more rationally, at the same time printing is also better.

I just started reading foreign language books this year. English books recommend books by TASCHEN Publishing House, and Italian books recommend books by GIUNTI, Mandragora, and SKIRA publishers. However, only after suffering several losses did I know that no matter how good the reputation of these Italian publishers is, they can't stop the terrible Chinese translation that can make you look at hematemesis.

books that I have not read but are a world-famous must-read: Gombrich's the Story of Art and Vitruvius's Ten Books of Architecture.

finally, the emergence of any school is inseparable from society, economy, and customs. To study art history, we should not only understand its historical process but also horizontally understand the social situation at that time. It will help to better understand the meaning of this art movement and the works of painters.
